What story are you telling yourself about who you are as a leader?

And more importantly…is that story actually true?

In this episode of No Cape Required, I’m joined by Dr. Jamie Goff, psychotherapist, professor, executive coach, and author of Secure: Discover the Hidden Forces That Shape Your Leadership Story and How to Change Them.

Jamie and I take a deep dive into the unconscious stories, beliefs, and experiences that shape how we show up as leaders—and in our relationships, families, and everyday lives.

Because here’s the thing: You don’t have to sit in a boardroom to be a leader. We’re all leading someone, somewhere, even if it’s simply ourselves.

We talk about how our personal “map of the world” develops from our earliest experiences and how those neural pathways can influence our behaviors, emotions, communication, and relationships. The good news? That map isn’t permanent. Through neuroplasticity and intentional work, we can create new pathways and change the patterns that are no longer serving us.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why you need to understand—and deconstruct—your personal story before you can create meaningful change.
  • How attachment theory influences leadership, relationships, and how we respond to our need for connection.
  • The two fundamental questions we begin answering early in life: Am I worthy of connection? And can I trust other people?
  • How attachment styles can show up at work, including the high-performing leader who insists, “I can do it all,” but struggles to collaborate or let others help.
  • Why some behaviors that once protected us may no longer serve us.
  • How unconscious beliefs can quietly run the show, influencing the way we communicate, lead, and relate to others.
  • Why changing your patterns takes work—but can lead to better conversations, stronger relationships, and more effective leadership.

Jamie also reminds us that deconstructing our story doesn’t mean throwing everything away. Some of the themes in our story have served us well.

The goal is to figure out what’s still working, what isn’t, and what needs to be rewritten.

So I want you to ask yourself:

Is your map of the world still working for you?

Or is it time to venture off the trail and create a new path?

This conversation is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, their relationships, and the way they lead—without needing to wear the Superwoman cape.
